Wine, writing and the philosophy of wine

Andrea Frost is a writer, author, speaker and researcher working on the philosophy of wine. With more than 25 years wine industry experience, Andrea has held professional roles in writing, media, academia and business. In 2020 she completed an MA by Research in Philosophy for which she wrote a thesis on the Philosophy of Wine and which was passed with distinction.

For the past several years, Andrea has worked as an independent researcher in the UK continuing her exploration into the philosophy of wine. In this capacity, Andrea has presented papers at the British Society of the Philosophy of Religion Conference (Oxford), the Roger Scruton Legacy Foundation ‘Beauty’ Conference (Cambridge), and the Cambridge Divinity School, among others.

Andrea has served as a writer, author and columnist for some of the world’s leading wine publications, establishing a reputation for her philosophical approach to wine over more than a decade of work. Her ‘Curiosities’ column for The World of Fine Wine and her ‘Salon’ column on JancisRobinson.com earned her the coveted Louis Roederer International Wine Columnist of the Year award. Additionally, Andrea has produced many features for various publications including The Australian, Bullipedia’s Vinos, Sumillería: el vino en el restaurante Gastronómico, and the Halliday Wine Companion magazine, among others.

In 2013, Andrea’s first book, Through a Sparkling Glass, was published by Hardie Grant and received many favourable reviews. The World of Fine Wine described it as ‘More like an evening with a particularly erudite and witty dinner companion than a class at the local wine school’ and Andrew Jefford wrote ‘If, like me, you get tired of technicalities and suffer tasting-note nausea, I recommend you join Andrea on her gentle, thoughtful stroll through wine, life and most things in between’. Themes include ‘flawed’ versus technically correct wines, a reimagining of the tasting note template to include the subjective nature of the wine experience, and a ‘manifesto’, Andrea’s early approach to her enquiries into wine. The book was awarded the Wine Communicators of Australia ‘Best Wine Publication’ and Andrea the ‘Wine Communicator of the Year’ award.

Complementing her Masters qualifications in business and marketing from the Melbourne Business School, Andrea spent many years working in professional communications roles for medium and corporate wine businesses before returning to writing and later, her academic pursuit of the philosophy of wine.

A graduate of the exclusive Len Evans Tutorial in the Hunter Valley, Andrea has judged at several wine shows including the Decanter Wine Awards in London, Bragato Wine Challenge in New Zealand, and the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show, experiences of perception and assessment that raised more questions than answers and which ultimately led to her academic research.

Andrea is a regular speaker, panellist and interviewer at wine industry, literary and academic events. She has delivered keynote and panel presentations at PinotNoirNZ, Wine Day Out, and Melbourne Writers Festival, among others, and was interviewed for the National Geographic documentary, ‘Great Innovators: The Rise of Australian Wine’.

An excerpt from Andrea’s highly influential PinotNoirNZ keynote, delivered in 2017, in which she explores the limitations of current paradigms of wine writing and assessment on the experience and expression of wine, can be be found here.
